About this variety

NuMex Heritage 6-4 is the modern reissue of the original "NM 6-4" New Mexico chile cultivar developed in the 1960s, restored from preserved seed stock by NMSU's Chile Pepper Institute and re-released in the 2010s. Long, mild New Mexico-type pods with classic chile flavour and gentle heat (1,000-2,000 SHU). The "Heritage" designation reflects the variety's status as a preserved historical New Mexico chile cultivar from before modern industrial breeding shifted commercial production to higher-yielding cultivars.

History & lineage

NM 6-4 was originally developed at New Mexico State University by Dr. Roy Nakayama and released in 1964 - the cultivar that gave the variety its "6-4" identification number, indicating release in 1964 from the sixth selection in NMSU's breeding programme of that period. The variety became a commercial standard for New Mexico chile production through the 1960s and 1970s, valued for its combination of mild heat, large pod size, and reliable production performance.

By the 1980s and 1990s, NM 6-4 had been largely supplanted in commercial production by newer NMSU cultivars (Big Jim, Sandia, NuMex 6-4 improved variants) that offered better yields and improved disease resistance. The original NM 6-4 effectively disappeared from commercial cultivation, with seed stock preserved primarily through NMSU's Chile Pepper Institute archives and a handful of dedicated heritage seed savers.

The Chile Pepper Institute reissued the variety as "NuMex Heritage 6-4" in the 2010s, restored from preserved 1964 seed stock. The reissue reflects a broader pattern of heritage New Mexico chile cultivation gaining renewed attention as commercial standardisation has reduced varietal diversity in modern production. New Mexico chile-growing communities have increasingly valued the distinctive flavour characteristics of older cultivars compared to the more uniform but less-distinctive flavour profiles of modern commercial varieties.

For home growers, NuMex Heritage 6-4 offers genuine practical value alongside its heritage status. The variety performs reliably in temperate climates - the relatively short maturation time (75 days) and reasonable cold tolerance make the cultivar more accessible than many New Mexico chiles in cooler regions. UK home growers report consistent success with NuMex Heritage 6-4 in greenhouse cultivation and warmer outdoor conditions, with the variety providing useful production alongside the cultural appeal of growing a piece of New Mexico chile breeding history.
