Sound familiar?

You want to grow chillies from seed. You've watched a few videos, read a few forums, maybe bought a packet of seeds. But every time you look for advice, you get a different answer.

One person says you need a heat mat. Another says a windowsill is fine. Someone swears by cheap clip-on lights. Someone else says they're useless. Then there's perlite, propagators, feed schedules, humidity domes, and a shopping list long enough to make you wonder if growing a few chilli plants requires a small business loan.

So you end up doing one of two things:

You buy too much.Half of it sits unused. You're not even sure what some of it does.

You buy too little. You skip the things that actually matter, and end up with weak, leggy plants that never really get going.

Either way, you're frustrated. You've spent money. And you still don't really know what you're doing.

What if someone who'd already made every mistake just told you what actually works?

That's exactly why I created Seed to Spice.

I started with a seed from a jar of chilli flakes

About 15 years ago, I dropped a chilli seed on the kitchen worktop while sprinkling crushed flakes over a curry. I looked at it and thought: would that actually grow?

I used the wrong pot, the wrong soil, and the wrong time of year. The plant that grew was leggy, weak, and only gave me a couple of rubbish chillies. And I was ridiculously proud of it.

Since then, I've planted over 3,000 chilli seeds. I've grown everything from jalapeños to Carolina Reapers. I've tested airing cupboards, windowsills, propagators, cheap lights, better lights, coir pellets, heat mats, and more random setups than I care to admit.

One year, I grew a Carolina Reaper to the ceiling and got just two pods from it. I thought it was thriving. It was actually desperate for light.

Another year, my mum's rabbits ate almost an entire crop I'd spent five months growing.

And one of my best seasons gave me over 1,000 chillies — enough to make sauces I gave away to friends.

That's what this book is built on. Not theory. Not recycled gardening fluff. Real mistakes. Real testing. Real results.

The S.P.I.C.E. Method

Five fundamentals that determine whether your chilli plants thrive or struggle. Get these right and the rest takes care of itself.

SStart Right

When to sow, what seeds to choose, and why timing changes everything.

PProvide Warmth

The #1 reason beginners get poor germination — and the cheapest fix.

IIlluminate Properly

Why your windowsill probably isn't enough, and what actually works.

CCare Consistently

Watering, feeding, and potting up — without overcomplicating it.

EEye on the Enemy

How to spot and deal with aphids before they ruin your season.

Most beginners don't fail because chillies are hard to grow. They fail because nobody shows them the few things that actually matter.

Everything you need, nothing you don't

A few weeks from now…

Your seeds are up. Your seedlings are short, green, and healthy.

You know why they look good. You know what you bought, what you skipped, and why.

You're not second-guessing every step. Not panic-buying another gadget because someone online said it was “essential.”

You're following a system. You're watching your plants get stronger week by week. And instead of wondering whether chilli growing “just isn't for you,” you're thinking:

Right. I've finally got this.

15 years growing chillies from seed. 3,000+ seeds planted. Over 1,000 chillies in a single season. Made sauces, lost crops to rabbits, grew a Carolina Reaper to the ceiling that only produced two pods, and once ate a raw Dorset Naga for £5.20 on a dare.

He runs The Chilli Index — a growing resource and variety database for chilli growers worldwide. Based in south-east England.

He is still not entirely sure what the neighbours think about the grow lights in his front window.

Common questions

"I've never grown anything from seed before."

This was written for you. No jargon, no assumed knowledge. If you can follow a recipe, you can follow this guide.

"I don't want to waste money on expensive gear."

That's exactly the point. The book shows you where cheap options are fine, where they're a false economy, and where one smart purchase can save a whole season of disappointment.

"I live in the UK. Isn't it too cold here?"

No. You just need to understand timing, warmth, and light. This book is built from real experience growing in south-east England — not generic advice from somewhere sunny.

"Will this work outside the UK?"

Yes. The S.P.I.C.E. Method works everywhere. The book includes regional growing notes for Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Northern USA/Canada, and Southern USA.

"What if I get it wrong?"

You probably will get something wrong. Everyone does. That's why the book includes S.P.I.C.E. troubleshooting tables, a week-by-week timeline, and step-by-step instructions designed to help you spot problems early and fix them.

"Is it worth £9.99?"

If it helps you avoid one bad gear purchase, one ruined batch of seedlings, or one season of weak leggy plants, it's already paid for itself. And it costs less than a bag of compost and a packet of seeds.
