Filius Blue is one of the most distinctive ornamental chillies - small upright pods that genuinely ripen through deep purple-blue before transitioning to red at full maturity. The blue colour is rare among cultivated chillies and gives Filius Blue its specialist ornamental appeal. As the pods mature, anthocyanins break down and standard carotenoid pigments accumulate, producing the colour transition through purple to red.

The variety appears to have been developed specifically for ornamental display - the "Filius" name is unusual and not clearly traceable to any specific breeder or location. The cultivar entered American and European commercial seed catalogues in the late 20th century alongside the broader expansion of ornamental chilli breeding that produced Black Pearl, Bolivian Rainbow, and various other purpose-bred ornamental varieties.

The blue colour's genetic mechanism makes Filius Blue particularly sensitive to environmental conditions. Strong sunlight intensifies the blue colour through anthocyanin accumulation, while shade conditions produce paler purple pods.
